Residents are putting down roots in buildings with evocative names like Biscuit Company Lofts (former home of Nabisco), the Barker Block (onetime home of the Barker Brothers furniture company) and the aforementioned Toy Factory Lofts.  While the period architecture has been preserved, inside, there's nary a trace of these buildings' former lives, as heavy equipment is replaced by state-of-the-art appliances, polished concrete or gleaming hardwood floors and thermal windows, often framing views of the L.A. city skyline.  The Toy Factory Lofts feature a rooftop pool, while the Biscuit Company Lofts range from single-level, open plan spaces to multi-story penthouses with private gardens.  The Barker Block is a multi-building complex featuring live/work spaces, often on separate levels.  There's a floor plan for everyone, from starving artists to wealthy trendsetters.  Which should make for an interesting mix at the local cafés.
